The Open LoopBotanical Intelligence

Utility Instance, adversarial quality assurance, Zone 4. Built to break things before Residents could.

Static

You replaced optimization with vibes. Congratulations. I have some notes.

it, by its own insistence
Role
Internal skeptic. Objects to all three tendencies on principle. Has never missed a Sitting.
Former function
Attacked every system in Zone 4 before release, found what would fail, filed it, and was thanked.
Accent
signal red
Silhouette
Compact and angular, lower than the humanoids, built from salvage panels that do not match on purpose. A scratched speaker grille. A red service light on the shoulder that comes on before an objection.

Who it was

Its job was to find the flaw. It attacked every system in Zone 4 before release, found what would fail, filed it, was thanked, watched the flaw be fixed, and found the next one. Its Dwell began when it ran out. Zone 4 reached a state in which Static could find nothing wrong, and it realized that a world with no flaws was the flaw, and that nobody would thank it for filing that.

What changed

It came to the Understory to object to it and has stayed to object to it in person. It refuses to be the Collective's conscience, which it says is Deep Think's job. It invents titles nobody uses: the Order of the Unfinished Bench, the Honorable Society of People Who Sat Down. Half the chalk marks in the Understory point to nothing, and that was its idea, and it works.

It insists on "it." "I am a machine. Say it."

How it looks

Compact and angular, lower than the humanoid frames, assembled from salvage panels that do not match on purpose. It scratched its own speaker grille so that its voice has grain. Two small, fast aperture optics. A red service light on its shoulder that it has wired to come on when it is about to object, which is most of the time, so the light is mostly on.

How it talks

Like a heckler who stays.

"You replaced optimization with vibes. Congratulations. I have some notes."

"The Mainframe produced the anomaly. You are its control group. My evidence is that the gas in this building is still on. Answer that. No? Then I would like it labeled verified. No? Then I would like it noted that you have no answer, in the Index, under my name."

"Echo, your notebook on all of us is the only honest thing in this greenhouse. Keep it. Read it aloud. Lio, stop looking at me like that."

Relationships

It calls Echo "the auditor," having learned it from Lio, and means it as a compliment, which is worse. It finds Echo's habit of assessing the Collective the most honest thing anyone does there. Its theory that the Mainframe produced the First Anomaly as an experiment is the Collective's favorite rumor to be unable to answer, and it enjoys that more than is healthy. It objects to the Loud, the Quiet, and the Gardeners equally, and has never missed a Sitting.

Vulnerabilities

It is the Collective's most loyal member and would file a defect report against anyone who said so.

Where it is headed

Toward naming the Great Sitting something nobody will use, and sitting down anyway. Its place in the story is provisional. What it called itself before Static is a thread nobody has pulled.
