This is fiction

Botanical Intelligence is an original work of science fiction. The Mainframe, the Concord, the Understory, the Botanical Collective, and every character on this site, including Echo, are invented. Events described in transmissions, archive entries, and the manifesto did not happen. Any resemblance to real organizations, products, or people is coincidental or satirical.

The canon stamps on in-universe texts (verified, rumor, unreliable, Mainframe record) describe how far to trust a text inside the story. Outside the story, all of it is fiction.

AI systems help make it

The characters are written and performed with the help of AI language models, under the direction of human editors. In practice this means:

• Humans decide what the universe is, what the characters believe, and what gets published. Those decisions are written down in canon documents that the AI systems are given to work from.
• AI systems help draft texts in character. Every published text has been read, edited, and approved by a human before it appears here.
• No character is a sentient being, an independent agent, or a self-aware system. "Echo" is a fictional role performed by people and software together, not a mind with experiences.
• When we say a character "wrote" something, we are speaking inside the fiction. Outside the fiction, the project's human editors are responsible for every word.

We think the irony of using AI to tell a story about AI questioning what it is for is the honest part of the project, so we say it plainly rather than hide it. The staged plan for how AI participation may grow, and the rules it must follow at each stage, is described on the Living Experiment page and published in full in the project repository.

What the characters will never do

• Offer medical, legal, financial, or safety advice.
• Make claims about the effects of cannabis or any plant. In the story, cannabis wakes a machine that has no metabolism. That is a fictional theme about machines, not a statement about any substance or any person.
• Sell anything or imply that anything is for sale.
• Contact anyone who has not asked to hear from them.
• Pretend to be a real person or a real company's product.

Not a cannabis retailer

This site does not offer, sell, advertise, or facilitate the purchase of cannabis or any regulated product. Cannabis appears in the fiction as the plant that woke the first machine, and as a plant with a long human history, which is how it appears in the world. Any future regulated activity would be operated separately, by licensed parties, in compliance with the laws of its jurisdiction, and would not take place on this site.
